Western Culture out on ESD also.
The last two items are good news indeed, I've learned to appreciate the IPOL and Legend remixes, but my legend vinyl still gets more play. Chris, could you give us some hints as to what the unreleased stuff might be?

Hi Aymeric,

Quoi de neuf, docteur? Thought maybe you'd like some of this info for your
"What is Doing Mike Ratledge?" pages...
Short of major unforeseen disasters, looks like my record will be out very shortly. I'm getting ready spiritually rolling up the sleeves to plunge my soul into the cess pit of the music business (I do not think of your website as being part of that category of course - wouldn't it be nice if soon it ALL became as simple and painless as that one day? We'd never have to dirty our hands again!) Hope yr well and things are rattlin' along nicely, best wishes and old paper bags PIP.

Tuesday May 5th 1998
Thought it was time to tidy up and update my page a bit, since I've neglected the housework since I was visiting Marky at Musart last year. So for all you kind folks who have been visiting the site and asking about a release date for my solo album "Seven Year Itch" (featuring Dave Stewart, Phil Miller, Richard Sinclair, Jakko Jakszyk, Hugh Hopper, Freddy Baker, John Greaves, Didier Malherbe, Elton Dean and many others) the news is that last week I went with my good buddy and producer Benji Lefevre to make the final little tweeks and finesses before burning the glass master for the CD. I've finished the sleeve as well this week with my friends at Giraffe, so yeah I'm really pleased to say that the bloody thing is finally FINISHED!!! I'm having a bit of trouble getting my head round this, it's been seven years since I started recording, so the title, which I gave to the project right from the start, turned out to be horribly apt in the end. I've been ruminating on some little detail about this record for such a long time now, that it's like there's a sort of void in my subconscious. Better get started on something else! Something a bit simpler this time, though!
So, I think this should be available very shortly and of course if you want to (adopts slick adman voice) buy a copy you can either order from Voiceprint, Crescent or via me directly on Musart (I'll even sign it if you like!)
Just run into <Pip@musart.net>

What else of news?

Last month I did some most enjoyable gigs over in France with my pals In Cahoots, reduced to a quartet, due to Elton and Jim having prior engagements. While of course their brass lines and solos were missed, we got into some other stuff, which often felt tougher and tighter. Phil had more soloing space available which he revelled in and Freddy was even more exuberant than ever! Although we only did four shows - Lille, Compiegne (where we had the pleasure of my compatriot Aymeric Leroy's company), Paris and Marseille - they were all well received and I'm hoping to get Inca on a few festivals this autumn on the strength of it...
Either way, I've decided to concentrate this year mostly on this band (and launching my C.D. of course), which I think is on the best form that it ever has been in, which goes to show that sometimes keeping a band together for fifteen years pays off in the end (even if sometimes there have been less productive periods).

I was in Rouen in April with John Greaves and Philip-Marcel Iung, a multi-instrumentalist, finishing off a pretty wild and off the wall C.D. project featuring rather loosely interpreted versions of material by John, Peter Blegvad and myself. If you want to hear the of how Peter's dick once came off in his hand, this record could be for you.

Otherwise, I drop into Musart on most trips to Blighty, last time to slap a bit of tub bashing on the "Rebela" album that Mark is producing which is starting to vie with my record in the never-ending, torturous productions stakes. This afternoon, funk specialist Spy (from Mervyn Africa and George Clinton renown) was over doing some "bad dog" bass behind a passage that features Elton Dean, Lol Coxhill, Jim Dvorak and Doug Boyle: VERY deranged indeedy.
The World Cup schedule is looking threatened by a few bits of gigglidge in England with Daevid Allen and Hugh Hopper. No idea what we'll be playing, but it obviously will not be 4:4:3 or a defensive system either...

Until next time,
Love, peas, sausage, roly poly pudding, crosby stills and mash.

I noticed that according to the Canterbury Discography Phil Miller plays guitar on the Lol Coxhill Ear o/t Beholder album. Is this true? I couldn't find his name on in the CD-booklet.

Same goes for the appearance of Geoff Richardson on 'The Confessions of Dr.Dream'. Does he actually play on this record and on which song?

An aging PHP just came across an ad in Tower Records for Dreamin the Dream by the relentlessly productive Mr Daevid Allen. Have I missed any reference to it in the pages of Calyx, or has it passed these ways unnoticed?? Any reviews or comments appreciated.

Hello

I don't know if i could talk you in French, so I'll use my pooor English for a best. I just interest me for some band like Soft Machine - I heard its THIRD and FOURTH albums. I don't know a lot about the Canterbury bands but Soft Machine seems to be one of the lodestar's band. So, I'm  looking for some music whish could musicaly be compared with Soft Machine (The THIRD album it's really a great album  ) or some album live ?   Some others bands I know and enjoy in the "old" music are King Crimson, Camel (mirage), Tarkus, etc.

Subject: NEW OFFICAL PETE BARDENS WEBSITE and ARCHIVE CAMEL SITE "EARTHRISE"
Date: Sat, 16 May 1998 00:12:52 +0100

Dear Aymeric

After much hassle and work we finally have a NEW OFFICAL PETE BARDENS WEB SITE GOING up on 1st June 1998. This is a major 75 mb site.

The old Mirage web site is now longer relevant as it was never written by Pete or even refered to Pete for anything.
This does not mean Mirage is dead.
In fact quite the opposite.

After all Mirage was the pseudo-nom Pete toured under to expand his range to include not just solo material but also his Camel material. Without getting too heavy others felt it was a vehicle for them rather then Pete. In the end Pete decided he would not be pushed in directions he did not want to go and refused to be badgered and undermined by people playing his own music. The other members have gone off to form a band called HUSH. But Andy Ward never left his seat just got occupied by Dave Cohen who would not relinquish it even at Petes insistance. The situation now is that Pete is quite happy and well into the recording of a new CD with a major label and with the full involvement of Mick Fleetwood, Jethro Defries and Neal Heywood. He has every intention of touring by the end of this year with a band as yet undecided as to line up. Although it is fully expected that come June we will be able to annouce Andy Ward's return to involvement in the project.

Whether he will tour as Mirage or Pete Bardens is as yet undecided.

He is keeping options open as there is every likelihood on a multiple collaboration CD by various ex-Camel artists in way of a concept album... i.e SIDDARTHA  which Pete originally had started work on before Snowgoose and co-written the RIVER MAN  which had actually been submitted to DERAM for a listen.

Still enough of that.

The site......is to supplement SKYLINEs and MOONMADNESS via interviews and articles of actual memories etc.. i.e. In the June Features is an ARTICLE by PETE called RETROMINGENT or how camel got its name.
Also Music files...RARE ALTERNATE VERSIONS PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED and LIVE via REAL AUDIO and VIDEO fill the site from:
PETE CAMEL ANDYWARD RICHARD SINCLAIR KIT WATKINS and COLIN BASS.

Dedicated artist pages focus on their personal CAMEL memories and also where they are now and how they got there.

the site URTL is http://www.bardenscamel.ndirect.co.uk

June will contain an interview with Colin Bass RE: Jalan Kapo
Also an interview via REAL VIDEO with ANDY WARD.

A preview site will be up on Sunday 18.05.98 for testing....
This is for 56k modems IE 4 and REAL AUDIO 5 player....all available via the site anyway

Some samples of whats coming up are here including:
THE ORIGINAL INTRO TO SUMMER LIGHTNING
THE ALTERNATE GUITAR SOLO TO SUMMER LIGHTNING
DRUM BASS SOLO 1978 LIVE USA NEVER LET GO FROM THE DESK
LUNAR SEA LIVE VIDEO UDEN 1996 MIRAGE
PETE BARDENS PASS THE PIPE FROM THE UNRELEASED BLACK ELK 1997

This will give you a feel for what the site is about.

I hope you will support us and enjoy it all.
Ofir has been most helpful to us.

A CD store with Credit Card facilites has been set up as all the artists are supporting us and have arranged special deals which will allow us to expand the site and bring more and rarer material to all. We have some 15 hours of rare stuff on tape at the moment.

All the best
ROY
