Hello WRers,

Sorry for the delay since last issue. I've been away in England for a few days. Saw Gong with Pierre Moerlen back in the line-up in London, a fantastic gig in a great venue. More material from "Angel's Egg" has been included in the set, notably "I Never Glid Before". The band played two 1-hour sets. My only criticism is the lack of fulltime synth player, although Steffi did his best to make up for it.

During the week, I arranged interviews with John Etheridge and Dek Messecar, ex-Soft Machine and Caravan respectively, who both used to be in Darryl Way's Wolf in 1972-74. This should soon result in complete profiles on the Calyx site. Etheridge had a week's residency at the Ronnie Scott's, and the interview took place just meters away from the entrance. He has a new quartet which includes John Marshall on drums. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend the night's gig. But a recording session is planned before the year's end. I met Messecar at his home just yards away from the Jazz Cafe in Camden Town. He now works in the furniture business, and only plays bass occasionally in an amateur band. But he was happy to share memories of the good old days.

To round out the year beautifully is an upcoming French tour by Mashu, of which I hope to attend at least one gig. Then there's a British tour of In Cahoots, their first in almost two years. With the new Gong studio album soon to be recorded, and the latest offering from Robert Wyatt attracting lots of media exposure, the Canterbury scene is indeed alive and kicking !

Let's keep the flame burning !

Aymeric

Hello everyone--
"Shleep" is fantastic.  Highly recommended for Robert Wyatt fans!!!
Does any one know how to get a copy of the Wyatt tribute album that was done
in (I think) Australia?  A portion of it is excerpted on "Shleep" and sounds
good.

Hi Aymeric

One or two bits of Web news - first the inclusion of many Kevin Ayers lyrics on the Why Are We Sleeping site at 'http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~marwak/index.html'  This will be a complete listing shortly but if anyone has any priority requests I'll do those sooner. I hope they will be useful.

Secondly, a site called 'imusic' has set up a series of bulletin boards on dozens of bands they've culled from the Ultimate Band Site. Canterbury artists with their own space for us to leave messages include KEVIN AYERS
"http://imusic.com/cgi-bin/bbs/bbs.cgi?x=kevinayers";also for ROBERT WYATT and CARAVAN - same address as above with name change to 'robertwyatt' and 'caravan'. Or there's a search facility via the home page at 'http://imusic.com'
Maybe there are more of relevance to WR readers - imusic claim to have set up 35,000!

Check'em out! Best wishes as ever

Martin

Hey there Aymeric,

I'm Terry Valderas, now in Texas. I saw your query regarding the Journal I used to run. It disbanded in 1995 when I divorced, ran out of funds, and was advised to stop on the advice of one Mike King, Wyatt biographer. He's as much of an asshole as passionate about Wyatt's music, and twice as obsessed. To put it nicely, he's a jerk who thinks no one but him should be involved in Wyatt "information". I kindly dropped out. As a Wyatt fan, I felt he would take over where I left off, but alas he did not do such. No back issues exist as I lost them in transit between Oregon and Texas. Thanks for the query.
P>S> Wyatt's new album is tops!!!!!!
Terry Valderas

[I keep WR as un-moderated as possible - this post is one of the results. I decided to leave Terry Valderas' comments on Mike King unchanged. These are of course entirely his own - AL]

Aymeric
Can I comment here on your excellent What's Rattlin? Saw issue 69 and felt I had to respond since I am Librarian of the British Dental Association (BDA)as mentioned by Jasper. The Blind Dog Award he mentioned amused me, especially if it is read in conjunction with the lastest (November) issue of MOJO magazine published in the UK. In this month's issue there is a review of the recent UK Caravan concert with some none too flattering descriptions of the guys' appearances now (not their respective muscical talents I hasten to add). But despite being part of the BDA (the dental one I mean - check out our website at: www.bda-dentistry.org.uk) I am a big Canterbury music fan and in particular the Softs, Wyatt, Hopper, Ayers, Gong bit of it.

Cheers,
Roger Farbey
BDA

[The mention of the BDA was actually mine. "BDA" was used by Jasper as short for "Blind Dog Award", but the "BDA" tag reminded me of an old Monty Python sketch which ended with a stupid song going "Lemming, Lemming, Lemming of the BDA...", etc - AL]
