Actually, the Brotherhood Of Breath CD is currently scheduled for SEPTEMBER, 2001 or maybe May, 2001...definitely NOT for January, as all have been announced, including the National Health. Info, hyp, photos & realaudio files at: http://www.cuneiformrecords.com

Hi all,

The Victor label in Japan has just released a bunch of "Gong" CDs (Magick Brother, Camembert Electrique, Flying Teapot, Angel's Egg, You, Planet Gong and About Time). I have just received three of these (yes, the trilogy - predictable, moi?). They are wonderfully packaged miniatures (as is fashionable for reissues these days). Most importantly however, they are K2 (?) 20-bit remasters.

I dunno what this consists of but I can say that these sound fantastic! "You" (although perhaps a shade bass-light on side two - hey I'm a bassist myself!) is a revelation - it almost sounds like a new record! And "Love is How U Make It" ("Angel's Egg") had the most amazingly lifelike percussion swirling around my front room last night!

I haven't played "Flying Teapot" yet, and suspect the improvements will be less apparent, as the production values were not so high in the first place.

Now the downside - these are very pricey indeed (unless you happen to live in Japan, I suppose!) - nevertheless I've ordered "Camembert Electrique" now, too. I only hope that they extend this treatment to the post-Allen gong trilogy (Samal, Gazeuze! & Expresso II).

- Nick.

Dear Aymeric

A short note to advise all subscribers to WR that the "new" Soft Machine CD, Noisette, is very much worth acquiring and listening to. I am wary of previously unissued material, which can be rubbish, but in this case this is something which would have been outstanding if it had been released 30 years ago. I can particularly recommend the contributions by Lyn Dobson - quite a stunning and anarchic player. Does anyone know what happened to him?

May I say that, as a middle-aged longstanding admirer of Soft Machine (especially the early 1970s incarnation), I have been quite amazed to find that anyone else was interested in this and other groups. Perhaps it shows that those who were teenagers when the Canterbury groups came to prominence are still interested in listening to music. There must be a lot of us grey-haired souls out there!

Kind Regards et Tres Bien

Just another plug for the December AAJ (http://www.AllAboutJazz.com) where there is an phone interview I did in November with DM. It's in the interviews section, where I also noticed an interview with Brian Auger (proto Canterburiensis?)

Would any of you lucky Parisians attending any of those advertised gigs be willing to write something of it?

(I would be  willing to translate anything in French for all us language-impaired anglos.)

It's so good to read first-hand accounts by enthusiasts, when you're on the  wrong side of the continent/globe etc.

Rattlin good Christmas to all,
Tony in  Helsinki
