FOREWORD
A small issue, and probably a good opportunity to say that
"What's Rattlin'?", with the exception of the occasional
interviews, is generally a compilation of what *you*, the
subscribers (and there are several hundred !), send me. I must
confess in this respect that I'm a little disappointed not to have
received any report from Gong's US tour, and generally very few
gig reports. Maybe I just need to repeat it from time to time, but
YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS ARE NEEDED !

Subject: Wyatt and Kip Hanrahan?
Date: Thu, 27 May 1999 14:18:02 +0200
Recently I stumbled upon a several-CD box called
"Anthology" of Kip Hanrahan (a kind of crazy New York Jazzman),
who worked with dozens of musicians on his records, some well know
(e.g. Jack Bruce, Carla Bley,...), and here on the cover of the
box appeared also the name of Robert Wyatt. Does anyone know more?
I know a few Hanrahan records, but none with Wyatt playing. Which
album is it on? only this anthology? does Wyatt sing, or just play
percussion?
thanx,
Eric (who am quite a completist, actually :-)
[This message was also posted to a newsgroup and received
the following reply from "John H.R.":]
> AFAIK, the only collaboration between Robert Wyatt
and Kip Hanrahan is
> on the tune "Curtsy" (lyrics by Paul Haines, music by
Robert Wyatt) from
> the 1994 2-disc set _Darn It!: Poems by Paul Haines,
Musics by Many_
> (American Clave 1014/18). "Curtsy" has Wyatt on
keyboards, percussion,
> and voice, and Evan Parker on soprano sax. The liner
notes say "project
> and recordings guided by Kip Hanrahan," IOW he
produced the project.
[To which Eric replies the following:]
This one I know indeed, a very beautiful song, and the
rest of the 2-CD is extremely varied but also very nice in
general. So I have my answer now; I was just wondering whether I
had missed something.

Subject: Fred Frith musings
Date: 01 Jun 99 09:27:23 -0800
Hullo one and all,
Just wanted to thank father time for allowing for the
complete Frith/Kaiser recordings(instrumental)to be issued on
Cuneiform in a 2CD package entitled "Friends and Enemies" as seen
in last(#128)issue. This CD is filled up to the limit with 79+
minutes on both cd's (I love when record companies do this and
hate when they could couple 2 lps on 1 CD and don't). The only
change from previous compilations is that on Disc Two, the song
'Fifteen Blues' had an earlier title of 'One Eyed Theater'.
The appended, 1999 material is a tease(a good tease) and
one would hope that messrs. Frith/Kaiser are offering this as a
precursor to a forthcoming full length CD release.
I would also like to compliment the 1998 release from
Massacre entitled 'Funny Valentine' as this CD, contrary to things
I've heard, is stupendous... shows maturity but at the same time,
is pretty much in the same vein as it's 20 year predecessor, just
more polished. Fred Frith is really hard to date musically and his
recent stuff is sometimes hard to distinguish from his early stuff
in alot of cases.
Received a memo from our friends at ESD, and as many of
you already know, Henry Cow's 'Unrest' is either being
remastered???? or already is. Do we really need another version of
the same tracks at this point? Didn't HC archive their live shows
onto tape and put them into vaults as alot of musicians did which
have been released onto CD in current times? As I mentioned
before, Henry Cow is the kinda band that could/would do something
different to their set list every night.
A couple of inane/mindless thoughts follow...1) Was the
'Knitting Factory' in NYC named after the diverse artwork on
Henry Cow's first three LP's? and 2) Whenever I see FF(fast
forward)on a VCR or Tape Deck I immediately think of Fred
Frith...is this subliminal/freudian/or whatever?
Enjoy Everything,
dv

Hello Aymeric,
Here are two pieces of information I want to give to you
and all your readers:
1. Bill Bruford´s Earthworks will be playing at the 3rd of
july in Worms (Germany, a town at the river Rhine between Mainz
and Mannheim) at 22.00 p.m. This concert is part of a
jazz-festival there, from 2nd to 4th july. Other contibutors are
AL Jarreau, Les Haricots Rouges, Brian Auger, Maxine Weldon, Barry
Finnerty, Melva Houston & Billy Cobham among others. Contact:
http://www.worms-tickets.de
2. There is a beautiful version of "Shipbuiling" on Mr.
McFall's Chamber:"Like The Milk". You can get it too on the
sampler "Sometimes God Smiles / The Young Persons´ Guide to
Discipline Vol.II", featuring the music of the label DGM (King
Crimson etc.). This is a low priced cd (I paid 7,50 EUR) and worth
checking out.
Greetings
Wolfgang Tiemann
