Subject: Many thanks for WR 120/1
Date: Sun, 14 Mar 1999 12:41:46 EST
I am a recent subscriber but have gained a great pleasure
from your mailings and bulletins I was asked last week if I had
any knowledge of a Wyatt composition "Night of a thousand soft
toys". Sorry, no I dont know of this recording but I am still
picking through the olde gravel and archives to find the odd n of
those halcyon days in Canterbury.
I remember Softs at Mothers in Birmingham and Hatfields in
BRUM ?72/73 WITH A QUITE WITHERING PERFORMANCE does anyone else
recall that evening in BIRMINGHAM Town Hall. Also and around this
time Henry Cow and Capt Beefheart played at Birmingham Town Hall,
anyone remember or was it just too hot on the night. I also recall
an Amon Duul concert in the same year when all the synths packed
up and going to see The Third Ear Band during the first Miners
strike and only 17 people were presennt, I am not sure if this was
anything to do with the extradorinary outpourings of the band, the
inclement weather or the posibility that the band were just hype
and shite.

Subject: Assagai
Date: Thu, 15 Mar 1999 13:13:31 -0700
Slightly off topic here but I'm looking for CD re-releases
by Assagai. Does anybody know of any? For the unitiated Assagai
were Louis Moholo, Dudu Pukwana, Mongezi Feza and Fred Coker with
others (some of these are familar names to Canterbury
listeners). To my knowledge (and from Terry Hounsome's Rock
Record), there were two official releases, "Assigai" on the
Vertigo label from 1971 released in both Europe and the US &
"Zimbabwe" on the Philips label from 1972 which I do not think had
a US release. There are also a couple of budget label
releases (from the Philips/Phonogram stable) credited to the same
band name; "Assagai" on Contour and "Afrorock" on Sounds Superb. I
have vinyl copies of the Vertigo "Assagai" release and the
"Afrorock" release, none of the tracks are identical. Does
anyone have a tracklisting for the other two?
Thanks in advance

Hi everybody,
I'm Marco writing from Tuscany, Italy
I was wondering if someone could be interested in cd's or
tapes trade to expand mine (and yours) collection. I don't have
too much Canterbury material but own
a large collection of jazz, jazz-rock, ethnical and also
music from the past centuries so maybe you'll find something you
like on my list, oh, any suggestion about Canterbury scene will be
appreciate, I'm looking in particular for live recordings.
Please reply privately.
ciao

Subject: What's Rattling
Date: Fri, 19 Mar 1999 20:51:39 +0000
Hi What's Rattlers
Some creators attached to this list ask the question : how
do I stop people from ripping off my music? For the answer to that
question, one could do no worse that look at the Big Boys.
BRANSON
My old hometown drummer friend Barry Thornley was once the
manager of the "One Stop Records" retail chain... Island Record's
retail outlet which was later taken over by "Our Price" and then
with a severe loss of "Our Price" staff, by Richard Branson's
Virgin Records.
From Thornley's vivid industrial recollections.. It seems
that Richard Branson made his early fortune this way.
He would buy import albums in the UK at a cheaper rate,
saying that they were in turn to be exported abroad. He would then
take a couple of boxes on a day trip over to France to get
documentation.
Then he would sneak them back into the UK, to be sold at
fullrates without tax, without documentation and without
knowledge of a Conservative government which now in opposition,
still fawn upon his "abilities"
But did the musicians get paid?
Maybe that's why some of us are comparitively happy that
another old pal of mine once built a ramp and drove his old car up
up and away and into Branson's swimming pool.
Would someone else like to make a similar comment?

Subject: A Short Interview with Laurie Allan
Date: Fri, 19 Mar 1999 19:15:36 +0000
These are the replies of Lol Allan..
Q: ...Beginnings... ?
A: Born February 19th, 1943 - London.
Began playing drums at age 12.
Influences: Elvin Jones, Ed Blackwell, Billy Higgins, Roy
Haines
Q: Your beginnings on the music scene in the late 60s were
very eclectic - folk with Roy Harper, jazz with Chris McGregor,
rock with Piblokto and Formerly Fat Harry... What was the reason
for that ?
A: This was the EARLY 60s... McGregor was with Roger
[Bunn] on bass
Q: Did you consciously try to play in as many styles as
possible ?
A: No, just work
Q: This being said, do you consider yourself primarily as
a jazz drummer ?
A: Yes
Q: In 1968, you were in the Gunter Hampel trio with John
MacLaughlin. Was it then that you first met Daevid Allen ? Allen
has told the story of his band (Bananamoon) and Hampel's group
sharing a rehearsal room in Avignon in the Summer of '68, but
didn't mention you.
A: I worked with Gunther often. Occasionally with Roger on
bass. Yes, I met Daevid in France in Avignon... That was where we
met. John was there too.
Q: In 1971 you replaced Pip Pyle in Delivery. How did you
first get in
contact with them ?
A: I knew the late Steve Miller..
Q: This period of the band's existence is sadly
undocumented. What are your memories of the band's music ?
A: I can't really remember. I only did it occasionally.
Just work. Roy Babbington was in that band, with Carol Grimes
Q: How do you account for its early split ?
A: I don't account..
Q: Later on Delivery evolved into another band, DC &
The MBs. Although not mentioned in the name you were, I
understand, in that band too. Do you have particular memories of
that ?
A: I remember going to Holland with Lol Cox. That was a
package deal. For some record company.. Lol, cleaned his teeth on
a street corner.
Q: You joined and quit Gong several times... You replaced
Pip Pyle (again!), then played on "Flying Teapot", rejoined later
for that fateful tour in late '74...
A: Yes. In late 74 I got busted. Strasbourg, going to
Germany. We all got busted. same night as Ali knocked out Foreman.
"Sign this piece of paper, and we will release you"... I was
issued with a Proces Verbal. Never been back to France since that
day That drug bust was a turning point in my career
Q: Any particular memories of Gong ?
A: YES!!! I never got paid for any of the records
Q: Was it in any way uncomfortable to "replace" Robert
Wyatt on the two albums you did with him - "Rock Bottom" and
"Ruth..." ?
A: No, very comfortable... And I was very flattered by him
employing me.
Q: Your performance on both albums is particularly well
suited to the music, did you consciously adapt your playing to fit
Robert's way ?
A: Yes and no... You play the music for the music's sake,
whatever is required.
Q: After 1975, you did a lot of work with Peter Lemer...
A: Yes. There were loads of them, I worked with Pete
through the 70s. But for many of us jazz musicians, including
Roger, this was the beginning of the end of the possiblities of
earning a living from jazz in the UK... The young jazz musicians
of today are not faced with such problems. You should consider a
focus on the work I did with Roger, which was part of the Little
Theatre Club and Ronnie's Old Place set up.
Q: what have you been up to in the last... well, twenty
years !?! Still playing music to any extent ? Where ?
A: In the 80s I went back to school and updated my
education. I then started studying musicianship / harmony / theory
etc. Then nothing. I don't do gigs any more. Now, Roger and I
would both like to get back on stage and play jazz. But how can we
do so??

Hello,
I am a big fan of Steve Hillage.
I know he stopped his solocareer in the 80s to make some
production.
Can someone tell me what records he produced?
He produced records by Simple Minds and It Bites, I think.
Any others ?
Thanks.

Dear Whats Rattlin
In a record fair in Wantage U.K. today 21st March 1999 I
came across a cd entitled Caravan sings Van Morrison
recorded live in Belgium 26th March 1985. The label is Great Live
Records GLR9242. It is certainly the lads from Canterbury on a not
perfect recording, but does anyone out there have any additional
information on this curio?
Regards and best wishes to fellow Rattlers

Dear Americ,
I would appreciate it if you could add details of the
forthcoming
CARAVAN gig, booked for June 12th, in Norfolk. Following
the huge
success of last year's gig at The Park Hotel in Diss, we
have managed to
get them for a return gig!!
Venue is still to be finalised, but it will either be at
The Park again,
or at Harleston, (just a few miles down the road!).
Sorry its so vague, but I've only just got the date
confirmed this
evening with Ralph Cross.
I will let you know final details in the next few days.
Further details can be found on our web site:
